Today, May 19, 2022 would be Malcolm X's 97th birthday..
The world is blessed to have had the years we had with Malcolm! His legacy lives on nearly 60 years since his assassination. One of the greatest things we still have from Malcolm are his quotes!
My favorite Malcolm quote is
"If you stick a knife in my back nine inches and pull it out six inches, there's no progress. If you pull it all the way out, that's not progress. The progress is healing the wound that the blow made."
The message in this quote is so powerful to me because of how deep it actually goes in, pun intended! Some people see an apology as being "enough" to correct a wrong that they have done and although I strongly believe in apologies, it's only the first layer. Moreover, some may think they can right a wrong by doing something nice in response to a mistake or a wrong and again, that is just one layer of it.
Just as the quote mentions, "the progress is healing the wound that the blow made." Malcolm's quote was directed towards the American government and the state they were in at the time, but like many of Malcolm's quotes, it still applies to today. The method of righting a wrong is misdone by us all in our everyday lives. We can all do better at helping heal wounds that we created for others, intentionally or unintentionally.
I won't go too deep into all the references and angles that can be drawn from this quote, but I am interested in hearing what are some of your favorite Malcolm quotes.
